Ends on August 31, 2018

$10.00 USD

Out of respect for the wide spectrum of creative nonfiction, we've hosted two prizes each year, affording us the opportunity to recognize the best in both personal and documentary storytelling. However, based on the submissions of our first two contests, we have decided to add a third contest to recognize book excerpts from nonfiction published between 2013 and 2018.

The 2018 Proximity Editors' Choice Book Prize
Theme: THE BODY
Judge: This will be judged by Proximity editors, as well as two outside authors who will remain unnamed until the date of publication.

For our third annual prize issue, Proximity is looking for true stories that explore the theme of THE BODY.

Our bodies hold our deepest secrets and our greatest joys. They lead us on adventures and temper our dreams; they teach us to persevere and allow us to be surprised by our own resilience; they limit and empower. Bodies can be both desecrated and exalted. They offer stories of boundless inspiration and boundless tragedy.

In this issue, we hope to explore these and other interpretations of physicality: what our bodies do for us and for others, how we use and abuse them, how we approach limitations or push ourselves to the edge of what we thought possible - or both. In what ways are our bodies being acted upon? And, in what ways do we create a collective around “the body” — the body politic?

Our physicality defines and informs our perspectives, and your book excerpts for this issue/prize should work to do the same.

As always, we seek stories with a strong sense of place, well-connected with the chosen theme. And your book excerpts should be no longer than 6000 words.

Deadline: August 31, 2018

Entry Fee: $10, multiple entries accepted.
Each Prize winner will be awarded $200. Entry fees go toward this award, and any fees that push past the cost of running this contest will be put forth to pay Proximity writers in 2019. Finalists will be announced in advance. Winners will be announced in October, the day of publication. All finalists will be published in our annual anthology and a selection among them will be published in Issue 19. Note: We have been working on anthologies for all of our prizes -- a new venture for our team -- and we're excited to launch all three together. This is your opportunity to be included in that initial trio launch!
